IS YOUR SICKNESS/DISABILITY YOUR IDENTITY

“Your sickness is not your identity” a celeb posted this on social media one day and I disagreeā€¦

I was born with a rare medical condition called, Alagille Syndrome, which affects my liver, my heart, my bones, vision, hearing, learning pace and physical development. I have been in and out of different hospitals to see many different specialists for all of my medical needs. In my book I shared how this affected my whole life – physically, personally, socially and spiritually.

I know first-hand that if you’re living with a sickness/disability, you are IN it for life. Your sickness, your disability, is part of your daily life and daily routine. You can’t throw it out. There is no separation.

You can’t say that your sickness is not your identity, because it is who you are.

If someone has diabetes, he or she is diabetic.

If someone had an amputation, he or she is an amputee.

I had a liver transplant, I am a post transplant patient and it will always be who I am.

We want to accept our sickness/disability, not ignore it or take it out of our lives. Your sickness/disability is your identity and as Christians, this is okay, because our sickness/disability is not our only identity. Our identity is also in Christ. “I am a child of God.” “You are a child of God.” This identity is not only part of who we are, but it is the main and central part of us.
