IMPAIRMENT AND INSPIRATION

Did you know that your impairment can be used as an inspiration for yourself first, and for others second.

But what is impairment? How would you describe it? Or what words would you associate it with?

According to the World Wide Web, impairment refers to the loss, reduction or weakening of a function or ability in a part of the body or mind. It can be a physical, sensory or a cognitive condition that affects an individuals normal functioning. Impairment can be temporary or permanent, and it can result from injury, illness, aging or a condition from birth.

Some synonyms associated with impairment include:- Limitation. Deficiency. Deterioration. Damage. Malfunction.

One good example of this definition of impairment is my illness from birth – Alagille Syndrome – because of my congenital condition, I’ve experienced physical and sensory impairments. I was deficient in vitamins and nutrients. I had a liver that was damaged. I’m legally blind on one eye. I have a slight hearing loss. These are just some examples of my impairments. I shared more in my book.

Living with impairment can be tough and even heartbreaking. But thank God, I’ve arrived at a place where inspiration is all around. My impairments have brought inspiration to me, meaning I’ve learned a lot about God, myself, life, living with multiple medical conditions and disabilities, suffering, and pain. I have been inspired by my impairments. And now that I’m inspired, I’m motivated and passionate to inspire others.

Impairment can be a dark and negative experience, but what if you pause for a moment and look at it in a positive light. What if you flipped the script, yes, turn over or turn to the next page, and write a different story to inspire yourself and others. Your from-impairment-to-inspiration story can be powerful and helpful. Consider how your challenges have shaped you and how sharing your journey might uplift someone else who’s struggling.

How about a few examples of famous figures who have used their impairment as inspiration:- Nick Vujicic. Helen Keller. Bethany Hamilton.

Let your impairment be the foundation for personal inspiration, and through that, inspire others.
